Feature Article: Slots 2008 - Bally

Bally presents a unique lineup of products and technology covering video slots; reel-spinning slots; Class II, lottery, wide-area progressives, specialty games and group-play games--more than 100 unique games.

The Bally Power Bonusing suite of products includes the player-centric bonusing capabilities of Bally Power Rewards, Bally Power Promotions, Bally Power Coupon, Bally Power Sweepstakes and Bally Power Winners.

Bally took the concept behind its successful CineVision slant-style video slot cabinet and created the new CineReels cabinet featuring up to seven mechanical reels, an industry first. Multiple game titles in 3, 4, 5 and 7-reel configurations including Breeders Cup will be on casino floors soon. Breeders Cup links six slots to a common bonus round horserace viewed on the top box screen. Players place their bets and once the bonus round is triggered, all qualified players are ‘in the race.’

CineReels also features a high-resolution 20-inch widescreen touch-enabled display ideally located for interactive gaming. With enhanced audio and a standard footprint, CineReels is ergonomically designed, player friendly and comfortable armrest.
One of the key highlights is the debut of the much-anticipated GameMaker, multi-game platform. Originally introduced in 1994, GameMaker was the first multi-game to gain widespread acceptance among casino players. Now, 13 years and tens of thousands of GameMakers later, the new GameMaker HD is reborn as a modern technological masterpiece in the Alpha Elite V20 / 20 and CineVision cabinets.

In addition, some of the other key premium games soon to be at a casino near you are Hot Shot Frenzy--a new four-reel variation of the highly successful five-reel Hot Shot Progressive series. Hot Shot Frenzy features four mini-versions of Bally’s popular frenzy-style reel-spinners as part of an exciting bonus-round experience for players. A new seven-reel Super Tournament Progressives group-play game on the CineReels cabinet will also be unveiled.

Bally offers a new video slot title based on its popular Quick Hits game model. This new multi-level progressive game is called Quick Hit Platinum featuring a 32-inch vertical touch-sensitive video display.

More premium games include tower games Jackpot 7’s, Fireball Reel Winners, Instant Spin and Reel Money.

For wide-area progressive games, there’s QuarterMillion$ link and licensed titles such as Atari PONG, Atari Breakout and S&H Green Stamps.

For players who enjoy 25-cent and $1 base denominations, there are Power Progressives, Quick Hit Progressives, Reel Control, Reel Winners Spin & Win Progressive, Multi-Play Blackjack, Roulette and Instant Spin.

The best for last is a new version of Pick ‘Em Poker, a 10 hand version of this classic VP game.

The player is shown two cards and picks one of two piles of cards to complete the hand.

That completes the round up of the new Bally line that, as expected, is stunning.

Slots Reviews

Slot descriptions/reviews are listed by Slot Name, Manufacturer, payout range offered, (low to high) and average hit frequency if available.

1) Super Spin Super Wild: IGT. 87-89% 2-3 spins.

Yippee, another multi-player game with nine player stations and a central wheel using the Wheel of Fortune basics.
Also similar to Coyote Moon with four rows of symbols rather than three plus multiple stacking wild symbols and free spin round that could give out as many as 255 freebies.
Players are required to make a side bet to participate in the wheel bonus that works the same as the original Wheel of Fortune Super Spin multi-player slot.
General, some of the 9 stations on the bank will trigger the bonus round on their slots within a few seconds, so several players are spinning the giant wheel at once. Each player receives the bonus credits landing in front of his/her station.
Super fun, Super spin makes for Super group fun.

2) Neptune’s Exploration Inc.: IGT. 85-94%. 2 spins

This 5 reel, 20-line penny slot offers a top jackpot of $1000. when you line up five wild symbols on the center payline. A nice payday for 100,000 pennies.
When you line up three or more matching symbols on the first three reels, you are sent to the top box bonus screen to select from two bonus events.

One that involves a single die among bonus credit amounts, question marks, and a second that displays 3 starfish and collect symbols. When the bonus begins, you go to the bonus with the die in the middle to roll for a number of spaces to determine your award of from 10 to 75 credits or a question mark. For the question mark, the game moves to the top bonus event of either starfish or collect symbols. If the flashing stops on three starfish symbols before landing on collect, the player wins 1000 credits.

I suggest you ‘explore’ this slot for the higher than normal payout possibilities.

3) Village People Party: Willams Gaming. 87-94%.2-3 spins.

The characters-- a sailor, policeman, biker, cowboy, Indian and construction worker, disco music, dancing of course and a bonus round to include Pooper characters like Jackpot Party are all here packaged in an exciting slot experience.

Line up bonus symbols on the first, third and fifth reels, listen to familiar tunes like YMCA, In the Navy and Macho Man and view the six Village People and make your choice for 1X to 5X your total bet. Or another bonus round displays a group of records to pick for a bonus multiplier while the unwanted Party Pooper ends the bonus. If Pick a Macho Man is displayed, choose a second character for mounting future credits. Watch for additional 2X, 3X or 5X multipliers.

Let’s hear it for YMCA, YMCA…

Jackpot Bulletin: Winning Stories

Jersey Educator – A New Millionaire

A 56 year-old special education teacher from Jersey hit it big with a $1,577,661 MegaJackpot at a nickel Wheel of Fortune slot at Harrah’s Atlantic City. The anonymous millionaire went with her favorite slot while visiting AC with a friend. The huge strike astonished the winner, but she stated her life would not change except for repairs to her current home and a new car.

OK is Lucky

Jorgelino Rivera won $479,987 playing at a Wheel of Fortune MegaJackpot dollar machine at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK. Rivera, a traveling car salesman from Grand Prairie, TX said he plays whenever he finds a casino and his work takes him to Texas, California and Nevada. This is my “first big win,” making OK my “lucky state.” stated the smiling winner.

He plans to play more games because he “likes the excitement.” Rivera also said he would continue working at his present job as he enjoys traveling

A Load of Pennies

A Wheel of Fortune slot at Kickapoo Casino, OK brought Robyn Woodin, an insurance agent from Jones, OK a load of pennies equaling $231,663. Wooding, a regular at the casino stated,

“I always play here and always play the penny machines.”

After betting only $10, the winner wasn’t sure she had won the top progressive prize. “I was talking on the phone with my husband when I hit the jackpot.” The machine locked and a nearby player told her that she won the MegaJackpot. Future plans point to opening her own insurance agency.

Readers FYI: Current gaming news of interest.

Regular readers of Casino Players Ezine and I have discussed server-based slots. I am glad to know that the regulators realize that there are valid concerns from slot players as per this article:

1) Regulators Tackle Server-Based Slot Issues

"Please wait while we prepare to take more of your money."

Blaine Preston, gaming enforcement manager of the Missouri Gaming Commission, told more than 350 gaming regulators in Las Vegas last week that that was going to be the message flashed to gamblers whenever casinos changed anything on their slot machines with the new server-based gaming technology.

As audience members exchanged puzzled looks, Preston explained he was just joking, and only then did his audience begin chuckling.

But for the millions of people who play slot machines, the notion that somebody in a backroom could change something about their slot machine without them knowing it could be a confidence killer for the integrity of the game.

Server-based gaming technology enables casino floor managers to make changes to slots from a central computer that functions as a server for several machines. With a few keystrokes, a manager could change a machine's denomination, its percentage hold and the machine's look.

By learning the capabilities of server-based systems, regulators are attempting to be ready when they start arriving on casino floors late this year or early next.

"The reality is that most consumers, the people playing the machines, can't tell the difference between a game on a server-based system and an existing slot machine," Preston said.

2) State Imposes Largest Fine for Underage Casino Patrons

For more than a year, the teenager lived the life of a high roller at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, buying tens of thousands of dollars worth of gambling chips, and earning more than $1,000 worth of free merchandise and services for the level of his Blackjack and poker play. But what the casino didn't know -- and didn't ask about for more than a year -- was that he was only 19, two years below the legal gambling age in Atlantic City.

While the Borgata should rightly be fined, I want to know where a 19-year-old got $34,000. to play at the casino? Gayle.

3) Counting a Legend: Author of Seminal Book on Blackjack Math Draws Big Crowd

Card counting for Edward Thorp was about proving a mathematical formula, not making money. A standing-room-only crowd of approximately 380 people packed a ballroom at Paris Las Vegas to hear the 75-year-old mathematics professor discuss the events surrounding his book.

Any student of the game of blackjack has read Thorp’s book and this article is a tribute to the math professor turned writer. Gayle.

4) Biloxi Plan Has Hospitality in Mind

Biloxi stands far ahead of most Coast cities in its Hurricane Katrina recovery, but it launched a yearlong comprehensive plan this week with big concerns about the future of development along U.S. 90 and in East Biloxi.

Thirty months after Katrina, a string of restaurants including Pizza Hut, Ruby Tuesday and others is gone from the beachfront. "They're not coming back," said Mayor A.J. Holloway. "That's a concern. Biloxi's industry is hospitality," and the $500,000 monthly in sales tax the city took in from the restaurant industry before Katrina has dropped down to about $139,000 a month. Housing for workers is also a concern.

This is an interesting study of men vs. women gambling.

5) Gambling: No Longer a Man’s Game

"It's not that men are gambling less, it's that women are gambling more and on things that they never used to," Whyte says. "Nowadays, you're slightly more likely to find a woman in a casino than a man."

Reasons for the rise include easier access to gambling via the Internet, women making more money than ever before and, quite frankly, more social acceptance of seeing a woman at the craps table.

I've never been much of a high-stakes gambler. I do think that an occasional roll of the dice or pull of the slots (nickel slots are my speed) can be fun - in moderation.
