Casino Players Question of the Month

Q. Have you played any of the Top Slots reviewed in #111 and #113?

Q&A and Reader Comments

1) Gayle: Just read the latest ezine and it asked if we had played the slots listed on ezine 111 or 113. One thing I would suggest is that you put a way to find out (who)has them as I tried and so far it is only Harrah’s who has a web site that works this way. We are going to Vegas soon, so I am looking for help. Steve.

Steve: I gave up trying to keep track of inventory, especially for the newer games as they move in and out of the casinos so quickly. I suggest the larger Vegas casinos like MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Wynn and Bellagio but as you know--not always the best payouts.

The Palms, Golden Nugget downtown and local casinos Fiesta and Texas Station nearby might have better payouts but not a large inventory. I did a search of six of the largest slot manufacturers and only Bally's lists some locations at their site here: http://ballytech.com/players_only.cfm Good luck in Vegas and your slots search. Gayle.

You had to know that the slot creators were going to add the element of skill to slots andI concluded that this could be very interesting and perhaps a good thing as I read this article:

2) Slot Machines for the Young and Active

New York Times - The venerable slot machine is undergoing a generational shift. For more than a century, slot machines have required little more than cash, faith and an ability to pull a lever or push a button. But now, a new class of machines, aimed at attracting younger players who grew up with video games, is demanding something else — skill.

Adding an element of hand-eye coordination, however simple, is just one way slot makers are laboring to broaden the appeal of the insistently bleating devices that have proved so popular among older players. Besides new devices that provide an extra payoff for game-playing dexterity, manufacturers have developed communal games that link clusters of machines — which are proving popular with people under 40.

Coming soon are slot machines with joysticks, which the industry expects to be particularly popular, and others that will allow users to play in tandem or against one another, much as they do in many Internet games.

3) Gaming's New Frontier -- Nevada treads cautiously toward allowing Internet betting

As gambling profits spur an unprecedented multibillion-dollar building boom on the Strip, untold ranks of professional poker players, sports bettors and recreational gamblers continue to pour money into a shadow industry based offshore but with a de facto home in Las Vegas.

4) Restrictions on Online Wagering Criticized

Critics of a federal ban on Internet gambling urged lawmakers Wednesday to repair what they said was a flawed, selectively enforced law that infringes on personal liberties.

The year-old legislation prohibits American banks from processing transactions tied to online gambling, but leaves a loophole for bets on horseracing, opponents told the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., has introduced a bill to commission a one-year study on the issue. Others on Wednesday said Congress should lift the ban in favor of federally regulated Internet gambling.

"We do not prohibit betting on horses on the Internet, we do not prohibit betting on lotteries or fantasy sports," said Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla. "Either we prohibit it all because we are morally so offended, or we let it all be up to our personal freedoms to decide." Wexler is sponsor of a bill to specifically exclude poker from the gaming ban.

Another bill, by Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., would overturn the ban entirely. Berkley said a study should have been completed ahead of any federal legislation, and that the existing law creates a "confusing environment" for Americans who seek to wager online.

"The law actually made things worse by targeting the financial sector, because banks now may be so reluctant to process transactions that the institutions would block even legal transfers.

Gayle Storms: Editor's Rant

My Seasonal WIsh and Farewell to 2007

Ahhhh! The kindness, good cheer and respectful consideration during this holiday season, it warms your heart. But why can't it last all year round?

A smile to give and a smile returned for a shop clerk, stranger passing, homeless person, police officer or military veteran.

And in the casino: a happy grin for a change person, cashier and/or slot host all year round?

My wish includes a slot that never runs out of paper for TITO and/or a hand pay in minus 10 minutes. Check-in to your favorite hotel/casino in less than 15 minutes all year long.

Points that are quadrupled and comps that never expire every day of the year plus more, more and more of them.

Ringing jackpot bells all around the world and raining coins until long after the New Year passes. Allow me to rant no more about the lack of slots payout reporting or even better, the banishment of lowly payouts that zap our wallets.

In the end, may we all be safe and well in 2008, especially the troops.

Gayle Mitchell, Editor.
