CASINO PLAYERS EZINE #108

Greetings, Casino Players:

We begin Issue #108 with a follow-up to the server-based question from Issue #106. N.J. has now accepted server-based slots and this change is moving too fast for this slot player. Also in the Reader’s Q&A Comments section, there is an update of MS casinos, two years after Katrina, a lesson about ‘card-pulling’ and new debit card technology coming your way.

When I hear about a winner not receiving his jackpot, it deserves a louder rant than usual in the Gayle Storms section. You will also find three other rants, one of which asks the question, “Does he deserve his winnings?”

Q&A and Reader Comments

In a follow-up to last month’s question about server-based slots, Atlantic City has now approved them. I thought this change was going to take years, but within months, both Nevada and NJ have come on board…who’s next?

Slot machines can change in a flash
New Jersey (regulation) - Associated Press - More options are on the way for Atlantic City gamblers at the slot machines. The state Casino Control Commission has OK'd a measure to let casinos use an electronic server to rapidly change the type and cost [denomination] of slot machines

The good news so far: Casinos can start testing the new technology Oct. 1, although no gambling hall has yet asked for permission to do so.
The article re-states my answer in Issue #106:
“A machine must be idle for at least four minutes before changing its offerings, and no changes can be made while a machine is being played.”
Again, I ask the question, who is monitoring and enforcing the 4-minute rule?

Mississippi Update—very good news.
Eleven of Mississippi's 13 casinos are back, employing 18,000 people -- 1,000 more than they did pre-Katrina. And the population on the Gulf Coast is up to 98 percent of what it was two years ago.

I have seen 'card-pulling' before a possible big win many times and believed that players thought that if they removed their cards that they would have a better chance of winning. A theory I knew was incorrect because the programs for card points and slot programs run separately. I now find through fellow gaming writer, Mark Pilarski that there is another reason.

Mark: On an online video poker forum, it was recommended that just before you hit the draw button, you pull your slot card out of the machine to reduce your recorded winnings. Does this system have any merit?

Answer: What you are describing is called "card pulling", where a player pulls the slot card from the reader before hitting the Draw button on a hand that has potential for a big payoff.

For instance, you're dealt three Jacks, you pull your card, and that potential payoff of a four-of-a-kind won't be recorded. Depending upon the computer system used, this could reduce your recorded wins, making you look less of a winner, which gets you better goodies. Does it work in some cases? Yes! Is it deceptive play? Yes! Are eye-in-the-sky cameras watching you when you do it? Yes! Can you lose all comp points and privileges if they catch you? Yes! Case in point. I recently sat next to a player who was caught doing this; they confiscated his card, and they told him to skedaddle. Read More..

Nevada Gaming Control is looking at EDITH, which stands for Electronic Debit Interactive Terminal Housing. This technology would allow casino patrons to use debit cards to buy cashless gaming vouchers for use in slot machines, thereby accepted as ticket-in, ticket-out. I noticed this information in the item of which I was not aware, ‘tis a good thing, yes?  Having credit card or debit machines directly connected to slot machines is against Nevada gaming regulations.

Gayle Storms: Editor's Rant

1) Man Sues Sandia Casino, Alleging It Did Not Pay Jackpot
New Mexico (Indian gaming) - Associated Press - A Bernalillo County man has sued Sandia Resort & Casino, alleging it failed to pay him a jackpot of nearly $1.6 million last year. Gary Hoffman said he thought he was the luckiest man in the state when he hit the jackpot on August 16, 2006. But when the casino refused to pay, "I realized on that day that I was the unluckiest man in New Mexico,'' he said. Hoffman is seeking the winnings plus punitive damages.

Hoffman, in a lawsuit filed in state district court in Albuquerque last week, said he'd won several bonus rounds on the Mystical Mermaid slot machine when it indicated he had won $1,597,244.10.

Can you hear me yelling, “Fowl”? Further to this story, several players and casino employees congratulated Mr. Hoffman and he went through the appeal process, but still no cash. What is particularly annoying is that the reason behind the non-payment is not answered in the article and Sandia is not talking. The usual excuse of ‘malfunction’ was not offered.

2) What happens at Elgin casino stays at Elgin casino, man finds...
Here’s the quick story about Nick Del Giudice and the Elgin Casino. Ten years ago, he bans himself from the casino. In 2005, he returns to the casino and is allowed to play and loses at least a dozen times. Last December, he wins $22,000 at the craps table.

But when he walked to the window to cash in, his luck turned to snake eyes. Citing the state's self-exclusion program, casino officials seized his winnings. Then they charged him with trespassing. Now, his case is making its way through Kane County Circuit Court. Last week, a judge set Del Giudice's jury trial for December.

Del Giudice said the casinos never stopped him from withdrawing money from ATMs or getting credit card advances when he was losing.

"The one time I win big, they confiscate it," he said. "I couldn't believe it."

What do you think?
My husband says, “He doesn’t deserve the money and should play by the rules he set up when he banned himself”.
I say, “yes, he does deserve the money, even though it was a stupid move to return” OR “the casino should reimburse him for verifiable previous losses.”

3) "If she had just gone in (to Caesars) on her own, that would be one thing," her lawyer said. Instead, the lawyer told the judge, he intends to prove that casino officials knew that Kephart was an addicted gambler and that they pursued her because she had money to spare from a $1 million inheritance.

This is another banning story, but with a twist. This lady was banned initially and owed money to the casino who sued. Later, upon hearing about an inheritance, the casino welcomed her back and then sues again for owed money. In my opinion, Caesar has made a bet they cannot win.

4) Insurance fraud charged in 'staged' casino bus crash Pennsylvania - Associated Press - Twelve people have been charged with insurance fraud in a 2004 casino bus crash that authorities allege was staged so the passengers could cash in by filing bogus injury claims. The vehicles received little damage in the crash, which occurred about five minutes after the chartered bus left its pickup location in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood.

Immediately afterward, 20 of the 21 passengers reported injuries and were brought to a hospital. Corbett said Wertz's insurer, Lancer Insurance Co., eventually received claims for all 21 passengers - plus eight others who were not on the bus.

There is no middle ground about this report—it’s just wrong, wrong, wrong! And a double rant to those claimers who were not even on the bus. The lawyers pushing these bogus claims share some of blame. Additionally, it harms legitimate claims from people who are really in pain.
