Gayle: Question on the new server based slots. I read where they are required to be down for 4 minutes before they can be changed to another game.
What if you are in the middle of a spin or maybe on a bonus roll of some kind? Also, does it affect your credits or do they just Tivo them
to you in a payout? Old people worry and just want to know. If it is a progressive machine, does it have any effect on a single machine or
all in the series hooked up to them? What about the progressive payout itself? Kerry
Kerry: In reply to your question, the slot has to be idle for at least 4 minutes before any changes can be implemented, therefore as long as you are playing, whether progressive or not, nothing will change. I read that this was one of the 'bugs' ironed out before the latest release.
The games and/or payout percentages cannot be changed unless that machine and all games offered on said machine in a particular casino is idle for at least 4 minutes.
Another consideration is that server based slots will not be completely implemented for quite some time. Most casinos do not offer them yet.
BTW, I like your sense of humor and believe it’s not just old people who are worried about the ‘server based slots’ trend. Gayle.

Gayle: I think your strategies are great for playing slots but I don't understand the so call hit and run strategies. You explain how to test the machine with five spin maximum coins and if there's no hit, you have to get out of there. How can this be truth if all spins are random and the
chances of hitting in the 10 spin should be the same at the first spin? In that case, do you recommended not to play any slot for more than 5 spins? I still don't fully understand this one, an answer will be appreciated. Byron.
Byron: It's not a 'must-do' playing strategy, but rather more of a wager management strategy.
I find that often if you don't count the number of spins or keep track of monies inserted into a single slot with no real return, you will suffer greater losses and lose track.
Therefore, by moving on, you can try a different slot version, save money and perhaps find better play. Also, it allows a break from the action while contemplating your next move. Gayle.
I don’t know whether this is good news or not for Iowa riverboat gamblers. I know I have
heard from gamblers who didn’t like the rules and extra fees related to cruising, so perhaps ‘tis a good thing?

It's the end of an era for riverboat gambling. Scenic cruises on the Mississippi River aboard floating casinos will soon become history. The goal had once been to bolster tourism by stirring remembrances of Mark Twain, women in hoop skirts
and smooth-talking card players in frock coats, but the industry's focus now is glitzy electronic slot machines and casino table games. The Mississippi Belle II Casino in Clinton - the last excursion boat in the nation to offer gambling cruises - will make its final voyage on Oct. 10, according to company officials. After offering dockside gambling over the winter, the
paddle wheeler will be replaced next spring by the $35 million Wild Rose Casino, a land-based business.
I too salute the good deeds for the troops offered at Beau Rivage and thank Earl.

Gayle: I very much enjoy your column, it is the very best. Recently went to Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Ms. Everything was beautiful and went well. I noticed that Beau Rivage had a large number of military service men in line at their wonderful buffet. I inquired further and found out that the Beau gave military personnel a large discount on their meals. I feel that BR is to be commended for their generous help to our military men and women. Perhaps you could mention this in your column. Carry on. Earl

Here’s another story of a slot ‘gone wild’ to the benefit of players. What I don’t understand is that the slot manufacturer is going to reimburse the casino, however, casino management still
wants to go after the players who benefited?
1) Machine at Twin River Was Giving Gamblers Upper Hand
In gambling, they say the house always wins. But for seven weeks this summer at Twin River, apparently that wasn’t true.
One of the Lincoln gambling parlor’s 4,700 video lottery terminals was instantaneously doubling gamblers’ money, giving them a credit for twice what they’d put in.
The machine was issuing credits for double the amount of whatever patrons inserted up to a maximum of a $100 credit for a $50 bill, said Robert Vincent, a spokesman for GTECH, the company that supplied the machine. Patrons could redeem the credit without playing a game.
It was, says Robert M. Silva, legal counsel to the Rhode Island Lottery, “a gambler’s dream.”
GTECH removed the machine on July 15, as soon as the malfunction was discovered. But by that time, it had paid out $450,115 more than it should have.

And now for the dumbest casinos players, the award goes to…
2) A Los Angeles couple was wrapping up a whirlwind weekend in Las Vegas when Caesars Palace security officers discovered the tourists had played thousands of dollars in counterfeit bills and cashed out to receive genuine cash, according to an Aug. 1 indictment. Chen Chiang Liu and Min Li Liu were charged with passing counterfeit $100 bills through slot machines at Caesars. They subsequently exchanged the comforts of their resort room for a jail cell.
The Lius possessed more than 400 counterfeit $100 bills when they visited Caesars Palace between July 26 and July 31, according to the indictment. The couple unwittingly helped security officers with their investigation. While stuffing counterfeit bills into slot machines, the pair played rewards cards, which, experts said, are tied into a database that includes personal
information about each registrant, including each player's home address. Security officers
identified 13 slot machines that accepted a total of 60 phony $100 bills.
After discovering each machine was played with the same player's card, officers reviewed surveillance cameras and identified the couple.

I believe I would point out this mistake, however, Harrah’s response to this error deserves
a rant in my opinion. This is the second rant in a month about Harrah’s public relations blunders.<
3) An honest mistake collides with the cold, hard corporate reality
Moral question of the day: What would you do if you were a parking valet and a man who had consistently given a $2 tip every night for more than two weeks straight suddenly handed you two white chips, one a $1 chip and one a $5,000 chip?
Assume it was a mistake and point it out?
Thank the gambler profusely for his generosity?
Just put it in the tip pool to be divvied up?
Generous tips are not unknown. But does anybody out there think a $5,000 tip to a valet was anything but a mistake?
Randall Skaggs, a professional gambler since 1974, admitted it was his mistake. He'd been playing at the World Series of Poker until the wee hours when he went out to the valet at the Rio and gave the $5,001 tip.
Skaggs has been trying to get his money back from Harrah's Entertainment, owner of the Rio. To no avail. The chip had already been cashed and divided among the valet tip pool.
But Skaggs said the executives who checked it out told his girlfriend the valet pool was divided 20 ways, so each valet received $250. When hotel executives sent out a memo about the incident, one of the 20 offered to return the tip.
Skaggs thinks that for pure good will, the hotel should refund his money.
Harrah's officials think otherwise. After my first calls on Tuesday, Skaggs was contacted and told he wouldn't be getting his money back.

4) Foxwoods Bets You'll Get The Message:
Foxwoods Resort Casino is installing small video touch screens in 7,200 of its slot machines that will advertise the casino's services, make special offers on games or merchandise, or promote a
show or spa. Gamblers will sometimes be rewarded with an extra game or jackpot drawing on the small screen. Foxwoods will start by marketing itself on the small screens but could eventually offer time to outside clients, said Alex Rodriguez, vice president of slot operations.
from Gayle: this rant is an easy call for me—NO!, I do not want my slots play interrupted by, ..and now a message from our sponsors…even with the off chance of a free game.
It reminds me of when movie theaters started advertising before the start of the film — another very bad idea.
Next to Las Vegas, Reno is my favorite gambling mecca and it’s sad to see this report.
I know that it is easier for Californians to stay in their state to play, but in my opinion, the payouts and scenery are better across the mountains in Reno.
5) Reno lagging amidst global gaming boom
The gaming industry is soaring worldwide, but not in Reno, a leading gaming analyst told a group of young Reno business leaders.
