Feature Article: Slots/Video Poker Q&A, Part 1

1).
Q. You helped me before in response to some of the things in your book and I thought I would ask you for some extra tips.

  1. If you were me and approaching the slots for the first time, what would you personally recommend?
  2. Double Diamonds and Red, White & Blue. When the machine says "Deluxe" is that much of a benefit?
  3. Tell me again what is a non-progressive slot machine? Thanks for the help.

A.

  1. I would start with basic, single payline, two-coin max. slots to build your bankroll, then you can move on to progressives and bonus multi-line slots.
  2. Deluxe versions offer the 'nudge' feature where the symbol will 'jump' or move up or down to offer a payback. They are fun to play and watch, but generally, slightly lower payouts than basic slots described in #1.
  3. A non-progressive slot is a version that has a constant top jackpot that never changes, as described in #1—basic, single payline.

2).
Q. I love slots and this is my new plan. I will only spin 7 times on a machine. If it hasn't paid out, I move on. I never have much money to play on, so I really want to make my money last and maybe win some! $100 is about what I take into a casino. I tend to stick to the quarter slots, and fool with the 50 cents and dollars occasionally. If YOU only had $100, what would your plan be? Thank you for your time.

A. First, I would choose a land-based or online casino that offers the highest payouts. Some online casinos list certified payouts or view the offline monthly payouts published in this ezine. Start with the basic, single line slots, then with your profits you can move on to progressives and/or multi-lines.

3).
Q. I enjoy reading your comments on the latest slot machines. It seems to me that playing 45 coins on a five-cent machine is not as good a bet as playing a dollar machine. Also, I wonder if on a 20 line, five-cent machine, is it necessary to play all 20 lines or could you play five or nine lines and come out ahead? I gamble for amusement, not riches.

A. Some good questions here. I agree that basic, single payline dollar slots with 2-3 coins max. will stretch your gambling bankroll. I normally suggest that slot players begin with the basic slots--Double, Triple Diamond or RWB 7's. As to 20 lines, you should activate all lines, but with 1 or 2 coins per line rather than max. when you begin play. Hope this advice keeps you profitably amused.

4).
Q. The common wisdom regarding video poker machines is that the cards are random dealt and the payout percentage is based completely on the posted pay schedule.  Yet in playing the machines, they seem to go through distinct cycles that challenge that data. Is it a fact that the cards are dealt at random, or do the casinos have the ability to control the payout percentage other than the pay table?

A. Yes, you are right all picks are random, however the game is volatile. I'll give you an example. I just went through 5 losing sessions and then I hit for $1000, so you never know. As far as changing machine payouts at any casino online or off, there is a gaming license and reputation to consider.

I contend that it is just not worth fooling around with the % payouts when you could lose your license or reputation for a small amount of money. Also, casinos already make additional money from VP players who are not educated and are not playing the game with optimum strategy and/or without max coin each time.

5).
Q. Could you explain to me what is meant by "a full pay" machine, in particular as regards to a Deuces Wild machine?

A. 9/5 Deuces Wild full pay schedule reads nine coins for a straight flush and 5 coins for four of a kind under the 1 coin payout line.

6)
Q. I have a question about the reported payouts I see in your newsletter. I do study the payout schedules you post, however, I always wonder when it says slot payouts, are they including video poker machines with the reel slots?

A. You are correct; the slot payout percentages do include slots and video poker, plus keno, therefore, all machines. For online play, there are many casinos that publish slot payouts that are certified by reputable accounting firms. Often, I have found that the slot payouts online are higher than land-based casinos.

7)
Q. On the Video Poker machines with multiple games, i.e. Bonus Poker, Super Aces, etc. Does each game use a different deck or do all games use the same deck?

A. There are separate decks utilized for each game. In addition, there is a separate RNG program for each game. For multi-denominations game, there is again a separate RNG for payouts.

Slots Review

1) Golden Bear: Konami. 90%. 4 spins.

This game not only offers familiar poker symbols, but wildlife graphics as well.

12 free spins are yours when three or more bonus symbols are scattered on the reels.

Additionally, all wins during this freebie are doubled and the total number of wild symbols is increased for mounting credits.

It’s more than the Bear, that’s Golden with this slot in play.

Ancient Flame: Konami. 86-89%. 2 spins.

This version displays spots shaped as hexagons in a 5 reel window with a magical Inca theme.

When you connect three of the spots, you have hit a winning combination.

Other rewards await for a wild symbol on all reels except the first and/or a scatter wild symbol.

When three or more bonus symbols are scattered on the reel, a free spin bonus round begins and all awards are doubled. With a variety of possible wins, this game can ‘heat up’.

3) Egyptian Prince: Konami. 90%. 2 spins

Additionally, 5 scarab icons take you to the Scarab Feature Spins that displays a set of reels designed for two spins.

The Prince can be very generous during this bonus round with a top payout of $4000. while playing the penny version.

4) Rawhide: Konami. 85-96%. 1-2 spins.

This Western themed slot accompanied by several Wild West symbols, also features a 2 level Mini and Major progressive.

Look for wild symbols appearing on the second, third fourth and fifth reels to begin a bonus round consisting of 10, 15 or 25 free spins that double your wins.

The random Mini progressive jackpot starts at $10 while the Major starts at $100.

Step up pardner and enjoy the fun of the Wild West.

Jackpot Bulletin: Winning Stories

Day Tripper Win

An anonymous New Yorker’s day trip to AC resulted in a $1,630,330. win.

The now millionaire, construction worker hit the huge payday while playing a Wheel of Fortune $5 progressive slot machine at Resorts AC.

The startled winner stated that he was not sure what his plans for the money might be.

However, as he has done in the past, he will likely make a return trip to AC.

Aloha in the Future

"I was initially looking for the quarter machines, but couldn’t find them, so decided to play the dollars." Geraldine Mack of Henderson NV then played about $100 at Wheel of Fortune and won $1,412,982. "I didn’t know I had won," said Mack, "a gentlemen two machines down told me I had won $2000 and I was thrilled, then another person told me it was a million."

Geraldine, a 69 year old retiree and her son were playing at the Flamingo, a Vegas strip casino.

The millionaire continued, "We play at the Flamingo often and I always play Wheel, the red, white and blue version. I called my daughter immediately after realizing my huge jackpot and she said that she had a feeling that I was going to win."

Plans for the future include paying off her home and bills, and accompanying her daughter and son to Hawaii.

Family Gathering Produces a Millionaire

The family of Eradyn Perez, 34 of Houston, TX. gathered at the Isle of Capri Grand Palais Casino in Lake Charles, LA. After an input of just $60, Perez hit at the quarter Wheel of Fortune to the grand tune of $1,025,426. The shocked millionaire said, "I thought I won $1500, not the statewide progressive."

While undecided about future plans for the windfall, Perez said he will continue working as a waiter at a Houston restaurant.

A Wheel Good Choice

Jacqueline Beson, a day care director explained that she usually plays the Elvis quarter slots, however, her favorite machine was being serviced, so she chose a Wheel machine instead.

This choice resulted in a $630,299 hit while playing at the Lake of Torches Casino in Lac Du Flambeau, WI.

Beson was thinking that her "guardian angel was on vacation.", but now she looks forward to retirement and paying off her bills.
